Space Pirates and Zombies (SPAZ) is a fantastic little indie game. The game sticks you in a massive world, and I mean massive. I have chosen the smallest galaxy size (150) while the largest is x10 larger (see video). Each of these 150 systems has a dozen planets each with its own mission and vast nothings for you to explore.
The game places you in the seat of The Clockwork, a large mothership capable of building other, smaller ships. You can upgrade your mothership as the game progresses to increase the size of your hanger, which in turn allows you to build even larger ships. You take control of these produced ships. You go about doing a variety of missions, from mining meteorites, attacking an unfriendly station, trading or fending off zombies.
You start of with one ship type but soon are able to unlock many more. The unlocking system is very creative, every time you destroy an enemy ship (one that you do not own the schematics for) it drops a "black box", using the black box you can reverse engineer the ship, though the larger the ship the more black boxes you need.
Everything can be customised in your hangers, you can outfit your ships with a multitude of weapons and shields. Favour a stealthy approach? Your going to have to sacrifice shields to get that slick cloak generator.
Each system has civilians and the military, each whom you can help or take down. Increasing hostility will cause factions to attack you on sight. Random evens occur with some frequency, a battle between the two large factions, or bounty hunters entering a system.
The game as a whole is brilliant, the combat is fun and feels tactical to an extent, though not enough to have you pondering it for hours. You could spend endless hours in this sci-fi time sink and still have more to see.
The game does get a bit ponderous at times, during "large" faction battles, ships will be scattered so far away you spend most of your time flying endlessly rather than fighting. Some missions are repetitive, clearing toxic barrels for example, while the first time is quite intriguing, the next dozen or so do get a bit dull.
Another thing I did not like about SPAZ, was the menus, it feels lacking and not great to look at. This has nothing to do with gameplay however, and is just me being a bit pedantic. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to you. It is a blast.
You can buy the game here.
