Baldur's Gate coming to the iPad

To contact us Click HERE

Remember the good old classic RPG, Baldur's Gate? It will be arriving to the iPad this summer, alongside the PC release. The port to the iPad comes along with all the improvements and enhancements that are implemented in the PC version of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, plus various UI changes to make the interface much more user-friendly so that it can be played effectively with the use of a touch interface. What's even better is that the game will be playable on all three iPad models, so it doesn't matter which one you own, you'll be able to play Baldur's Gate!
I'm pretty interested to see how the game will play out on the iPad, there might be a couple of control issues as using the touch screen only is kind of like trying to play Baldur's Gate with only the mouse, which is pretty challenging, but not impossible. It would be great if the game turns out to be successful on the iPad, more game developers might actually start to bring back their old classics onto the iPad.

Hero Academy: Using a Knight's knockback against itself

To contact us Click HERE
When playing against enemy knights, be aware that their knockback is often an impediment to them dishing out damage.

Here is a situation I found myself in recently.

I am playing the White Dark Elves, we're near the end of the game.  Based on my current game state my Wraith needs 2 swings to kill the Wizard.

My goal for this turn will be to kill the Wizard, munch on him and survive retaliation from the Knight. This is going to require 5 actions:
1. Move
2. Move
3. Wraith Attack
4. Wraith Attack
5. Nom

I'll abbreviate this as M-M-A-A-Nom

My first move is obviously to get closer.

But after my first move, from which direction should I attack?  2a or 2b?  Instinctively many players would attack from 2a.  First, there is a bias to position yourself closer to your side of the battlefield, closer to potential reinforcements, etc.  Secondly, since you are trying to avoid the Knight, without thinking about it too much, 2a sounds like a reasonable place to go since it seems "farthest" from the Knight. Here is a shot of what my Wraith would look like if I attack from 2a.

At the end of this, I'm going to be standing with one open space between my Wraith and the Knight. The Knight has a sword and deals 300 damage per swing.  As we can see, my Wraith will have 895 health and since Wraiths have no armor, the Knight only needs 3 swings to kill me.  Now if my opponent takes a naive approach and walks straight up to me and swings, trying to kill me, the Knight will fail because of the knockback.  Since every swing will knock my Wraith back, my Wraith will survive the round.  (M-A*-M-A*-M where A* represents attacks that caused a knockback)  However, my opponent may be a bit clever and position the Knight south of my Wraith and use the wall to negate the knockback.

As you can see from this diagram, moving into position 2a allows a clever opponent to use the wall to get the full 3 swings on my Wraith to kill it.  M-M-A-A-A

To circumvent this, position 2b is actually the correct attack angle. If I attack from position 2b, the Knight no longer has a good angle to attack in a way that negates his own knockback.

With my Wraith in this position, the Knight's knockback will always work against him.  If the Knight approaches from either the west or the north (or a truly silly attack from the east) then every other attack will cause a knockback, pushing my Wraith away, forcing the Knight to walk forward to close the gap before he can swing again.
1. Move
2. Attack (Knockback)
3. Move
4. Attack (Knockback)
5. Move

The Knight could try to attack from the south but that still doesn't give the Knight enough swings within 5 actions.  M-M-A*-M-A

Hope this little tip helps!  See you all in game!

Review: Really Big Sky

To contact us Click HERE

Really Big Sky is a twinstick shooter through and through. You will die, and you will do so often, quoting the narrator "We're giving you this really nice ship, and we're not expecting it back".

The game looks great, its bright and flashy but not so much so that it blinds you constantly (though the flashing lights and glowing doesn't help when things get hectic). The gameplay is simple, you are flying a ship, and you shoot things, what and why? who knows, what you do know is that their out to get you, and your lasers better do a good job of stopping them!

You have a three tools at your disposal, your lasers, drill and spin attack. The lasers being the only upgradeable of the trio, making them bigger and faster every time you die using the (star) points you rack up killing enemies. The drill is used to burrow through planets that may come flying your way, forget going round em, just drill right through, they contain bonuses, from laser speed ups to multipliers and even bombs to avoid. The spin attack destroys anything and everything, but you can only use it three times total.

I can't say im good at this game, I can't even say im "ok" at it. It is fairly challenging, but there are many modes out there for you to take a swing at, from classic, arcade, peaceful (for you softcore twinstick shooter people like me), nightmare and many more to suit your fancy. A newly released retro mode places what appears to be a filter (or replaces sprites) that turn everything retro esq, though the game doesn't look all to retro while in that mode, its a nice touch.

The gameplay is quite simple, various enemies fly at you and you blow them up. There are various kinds, from the simple yellow things that swarm at you to massive bosses that ensure you know what the term "bullet hell" means. There are tones of enemies to fight, and when you though you saw them all, they throw dinosaurs at you. (No im not going to tell you, play the game!)

The levels appear to be randomly generated and this paired with the amazing soundtrack just adds hours to the replayability of this game (you wouldent want to keep dying to crappy techno now would you? ). Music? Check, Gameplay? Check, Co-op? Yep, there's even co-op, unfortunately I did not have a spare controller to take a shot at it but who doesn't like co-op? If only it was online co-op, if only.

The only bad thing I have to say about this game, is that it does a fairly bad job of explaining it self past the tutorial. It does have a "Library" where all the enemies you have seen are listed. But heres the issue, it has no pictures or sprites, just a name and description. I had to sit down and search the descriptions for the thing that killed me, so I would know what to do next time round, not fun at all. There also seems to be a weird event, where the colours invert and the music goes odd. I have no idea what this is about, and from my best match, I would say that it was a black hole, but ill never the sure because the library is essentially useless.

Apart from that, the game is well made, gameplay is fun, music is awesome and has quite a bit of replayability if your into your twinstick shooters. It is a great little indie title that I would say is worth the price.

You can find the game on Steam.

Review: Q.U.B.E.

To contact us Click HERE

Q.U.B.E. is a fantastic little indie title from Toxic Games.
You can buy the game from Steam, Desura, and gamersgate.

Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion has a clean aesthetic. White, bright colours and clean lines. The game looks brilliant, nothing special, but it is simple and just works.

There isn't a story as such, you simply wake up in an elevator, once it stops you are let into a room with challenges you need to complete to precede to the next level. The story is yours to figure out as the game simply throws challenges at you.

The challenges, as one would expect, start of easy, and then proceeded to get much much harder. The gloves on your hands control the coloured blocks.
Making the red ones go in or come out three block, the yellow form stairs and the blue launches you through the air. There are many more, but those are for you to figure out.

The blocks must all be used together, using one to reach the other to push the third, block riding, gravity bending and rotating entire rooms are all things you can expect in this puzzler.

Unfortunately I did come across a fairly annoying bug. On one level, there is a section towards the end, where if you fail too many times, the blocks are too offset to win the level, and you have to restart the entire level from the beginning. Other parts of this level have a reset button on the wall that return the blocks to their original position, but it seems to be missing from this section for whatever reason.

Apart from that the game is a work of art, a puzzle that requires critical and spacial thinking to solve.
Of course, it does share many things with Portal from valve, and we could not go though this without discussing that fact.
The bottom line is, Portal was a brilliant game, and being inspired by it Q.U.B.E. is no different.

The gaming world needs more creative games along the lines of Q.U.B.E..
It has its own atmosphere and it is fantastic, its only missing a story, something to edge the player on to find out more about the mysterious blocks and the suit he seems to be wearing, but it is a small notch in a game as fine as this.

Review - AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome

To contact us Click HERE

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome is an interesting indie title from Dejobaan Games, LLC and Owlchemy Labs. The premise is that you are a daring jumper, you leap off buildings for the fun of it.You fly link your wearing a wingsuit and have to duck and weave your way though buildings and try and hit the landing zone.
Im going to have to point this out, the name, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! for the Awesome, has a lot of "a"s in it. There is one upper-case A and then two, three, four and five moving left to right, while the same can be said for the lower-case "a" just the inverse. Just an interesting fact I discovered last night that bears no significance, so on with the review.

The design of the game fits nicely. Its the future, floating buildings, walkways of light, odd shiny code thing floating through space. From the intro video, it gives you a sense that this new world is heavily controlled and even the slightest step out of line would end badly with the people in charge, so you try to defy them by skydiving of course.
There isn't a story apart from what you glean from the intro video, but this is an arcade style game, it doesn't need a story. You rack up points and beat high scores, what else is there to know?
There are tones of levels, levels upon levels and even more upon that, you can definitely spend some serious time on this game. The way the levels are laid out is in a grid format, each level is a square. The starting unlocked level is the tutorial and you spend "teeth" that you earn playing levels to unlock more. The catch is that you can only unlock levels directly connecting unlocked levels. (see below)

The controls take some getting used to, the wsad keys move you in the respective direction, while the mouse controls the camera. Moving it to the edge of the screen however rotates your character which is incredibly awkward while deploying the parachute. What you have to  get your head round is that you fall like your wearing a wingsuit, you can travel surprisingly far in a very small vertical distance.
There are many think you can do to rack up more points. You can make hugs, flying continuously close to objects. Kisses you fly near an object and it lights up. You do get people cheering you on, on platforms, as you fly by them you can thump them up, inversely there are protesters who you can flip off. These things add an interesting element to the game.
Overall this game is different and its fun. More games that break the everyday FPS/RTS and generic genera never hurt when their done well. If you want to try something new, go for it you wont regret it.
You can find the game on steam or enter the giveaway here.

Review - Shank 2

To contact us Click HERE

Shank 2 is a 2D side scrolling action beat em up. You run along the levels and slice and dice multiple enemies foolish enough to get in your way in an attempt to stop the militia who have kidnapped one of your loved ones. You use a selection of weapons, a single ranged, light melee, heavy melee and explosives. The art style is great, as it was in the original shank though the sprites and environments seem to have even more detail this time around.

Shank 2 has a variety of enemies, from your basic soldier to massive brawler, crazy nimble cannibals and more. Each must be defeated in different ways, the basic can be killed fairly easily, care must be taken with brawlers and shield wielding enemies whos shields must be taken out with heavy melee before your ranged attacks and weapons can hit him.

A couple things have been added from the original, you gain points from killing enemies, weapons have stats and you can pick up (and throw) a multitude of objects in game that can be broken off from the environment.
The ranged weapon system has been upgraded, you can now use the mouse to direct the aim (where it used to be, hold up and right to shoot in that diagonal). The downside to this is a tiny (but annoying) bug, the game uses your cursor to direct melee attacks. Say your facing left, your cursor is to the right and you hit the melee attack button, you will turn and swing in the other direction. While you do get used to this it is fairly annoying.
I suspect this is done for the console plug'n players among us in which this control scheme would work perfectly.

Your score at the end of the mission is thrown up on a global leader-board, a nice addition (though the re-playability of each mission, if compared to something like dustforce where you strive for a perfect level run, is questionable). While not hard, the game is challenging, forcing you to utilize combos an your weapons efficiently. New QTE (quick time events) show up occasionally before enemies attack at which point (if pulled off) will deal a fair bit of damage and usually kill in a brutal (and satisfying) fashion. There are a few missions and the campaign is fairly short. The boss fights are challenging and the basic enemies are thrown in to increase difficulty and drop health packs, a nice event to add complexity while maintaining balance. Each boss differs and you will need to find a way to beat each, once discovered though, it is fairly easy, if your competent with the controls that is.

While there is co-op in the game, it exists in a survival mode. It does have online co-op but I did not find any open games or players willing to join (this may be due to the proxy on my internet though other games work fine). In Co-op you protect crates from bombers. Gradually increasing enemies rush at you, the bombers running in occasionally to get at your crates. The mode is a nice addition and would be fun with a friend.

The game gives you new weapons to use as you progress, this time round each weapon has different stats and perks, the chainsaw dealing more damage to bulky opponents for example. There are many environmental triggers in addition to the destructible weapons you can obtain. There are crates you can drop onto enemies and mounted guns you can use to mow groups of people down.
The game while a tad bit repetitive towards the end, is still enjoyable. I did have fun while playing this game and im sure other Shank fans will enjoy it too.

Coming back to the art style, it is brilliant, sprites and backdrops are drawn well. Most of the backdrops do look epic and the character models all have the same stylistic touch to them, where in gaming artwork, consistency is what you strive for. The animations are silky smooth and all flow together nicely.

The story is forgettable, but then again, this is Shank, your here for the brutal and bloody side scrolling action, and that's exactly what you get. The game runs smoothly and plays well. If your a fan of the orignal Shank, this game is worth a try.

You can find Shank 2 on Steam and Origin.

2. In this folders there are 4 files:
"TQCinematic.bik", "TQGameIntro.bik", "TQLegal.bik", and "TQLogos.bik".
Rename them to something else, adding just a single underscore or a number will do the trick.
(example: TQLogos_.bik)

3. Now create 4 text files, and name them like the original file names from step 2. (not including ".bik")

That's it.
The next time you'll launch the game there will be no intro!

Blizzard's desperate attempt!

To contact us Click HERE

If you still do play World of Warcraft for whatever reason, you should have already heard of this news. Blizzard is offering players with incentives to bring their old WoW friends back, if a player successfully brings a player back and gets him to get more WoW game time, they are both rewarded with the following benefits:
  • Sender
    •  Spectral Gryphon for Alliance characters
    • Spectral Wind Rider for Horde characters
  • Receiver
    • A level 80 character
    • Free upgrade to Cataclysm
    • Free character move
    • 7 free days of game time
This really is Blizzard's cry of desperation. Is World of Warcraft finally dying? Or are they just trying to get people hyped for their new "Myst of Pandaria" expansion? Either way, it's probably due to the declining subscribers and they've finally decided to do something about it. If you've been wanting to get back to WoW, now is probably the right time!
